In honor of Black History Month, we discuss the top 16 most legendary Black MMA Fighters. The month of February every year is a time to celebrate the many achievements and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history. Looking back at the last three decades of MMA history from the first UFC 1 event when the term “mixed martial arts” was coined, it is evident that Black MMA fighters have had many achievements!

1. Jon Jones – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 26-1-0

We start with Jon “Bones” Jones, who many would say is the most outstanding Black MMA fighter of all time. He is also the youngest UFC champion in history, having defeated Mauricio Rua for the Light Heavyweight Championship belt at just 23 years old.

2. Anderson Silva – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 34-11-0

Anderson “The Spider” Silva is one of the most famous names in UFC history and is known for his excellent striking abilities. This former UFC Middleweight Champion has the longest title reign, which he has defended ten times.

3. Demetrious Johnson – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 31-4-1

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson is very skilled at landing quick strikes and easy takedowns through his ability to move just out of range. In addition, his fighting style has allowed him to create UFC records for the most takedowns in UFC flyweight history.

4. Daniel Cormier – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 22-3-0

Daniel “DC” Cormier had a strong background in professional wrestling, which translated well to his mixed martial arts career that began with a 15-fight win streak. After that loss, he still went on to earn the Light Heavyweight Championship belt.

5. Kamaru Usman – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 20-2-0

Kamaru “Nigerian Nightmare” Usman also has a strong background in wrestling and is considered by many to be the strongest Welterweight fighter in UFC history. He won the Championship belt and has defended it multiple times.

6. Tyron Woodley – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 19-7-1

Tyron “The Chosen One” Woodley was a UFC Welterweight Champion known for his exciting fights, especially since he had a unique fighting style that most opponents found to be very unpredictable.

7. Israel Adesanya – Won/Loss/Draw Stats: 23-2-0

Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya is a charismatic fighter with a strong background in kickboxing. He has had many accomplishments, including winning the Middleweight Championship belt with a win over Robert Whittaker.

8. Francis Ngannou – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 17-3-0

Francis “The Predator” Ngannou is a heavyweight champion known for having one of the most forceful punches in UFC history and is regarded as one of the greatest knockout hitters in UFC history.

9. Rashad Evans – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 20-8-1

“Suga” Rashad Evans had a strong background in wrestling, and the pinnacle of his career was the very memorable knockout of Chuck Liddell at UFC 88.

10. Anthony Johnson – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 23-6-0

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson was known for his knockout power and fighting versatility and fought in three separate weight classes against some of the most well-known names in UFC history. Sadly, he passed away in November 2022 at just 38 years old.

11. Uriah Hall – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 18-11-0

Uriah “Prime Time” Hall has defeated several formidable opponents throughout his career, including Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman. In addition, he won the ROC Championship and is the first fighter in UFC history to win a fight without throwing a single strike.

12. Derrick Lewis – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 26-10-0

Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis is known for his incredible knockout power and has KO’d many formidable opponents, including Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes.

13. Quinton Jackson – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 38-14-0

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was a fan favorite during his career because of his entertaining personality and aggressive fighting style. The entertainment value that he brought to the ring enabled him to land top-dollar matchups against opponents like Chuck Lidell and Jon Jones.

14. Yoel Romero – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 15-6-0

Yoel “Soldier of God” Romero is known for his athleticism and explosive power. He had many epic fights throughout his career, including a crazy win streak of over eight fights.

15. Kimbo Slice (Kevin Ferguson Jr. RIP) – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 3-3-0

Kevin Ferguson jr., better known as Kimbo Slice, was an internet legend known for his “backyard fighting” before officially fighting in the UFC. Kimbo had epic UFC fights before passing too soon at 42.

16. Angela Hill – Win/Loss/Draw Stats: 15-12-0

Angela “Overkill” Hill was the first black woman to sign with the UFC in 2014 and headlined her first main event in 2020.
